Forty-seven kilometres outside the city of Baroda in Gujarat, is the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO world-heritage site. The oldest structures in the park date back to the 8th century while the additions made by Sultan Mahmud Begada date to the 16th century. It was once the capital of the Gujarat Sultanate before it was moved to Ahmedabad and therefore features intricately designed palaces and musjids as well as mandirs and stepwells that were present there pre-16th century. 

Champaner-Pavagadh is regarded as the “only complete and unchanged Islamic pre-Mughal city” in India, which highlights its historical significance.
