American Moslem Society
- The American Moslem Society began in a Dearborn house in 1938 with mostly Lebanese immigrants who came to work at the local Ford Motor Company.
- As more people started coming to the Musjid, especially on Fridays and holidays, they needed more space. Construction kept going into the 1950s. They added a prayer hall, a lecture hall, an office, two small minarets, and a big green dome on the first floor. The Musjid grew from a small place to 12,000 square feet.
- In 1982, they started a weekend school at the Musjid for the growing number of Muslim kids in the area. Then, in 1986, they decided to make the Musjid even bigger. They doubled the size to 24,000 square feet. By 2000, they expanded again, making it 48,000 square feet. They also made the weekend school bigger and added more stuff to the building.
- The Musjid changed over the years. It started with mostly Lebanese people, but now it has Iraqis, Pakistanis, Palestinians, and people from America. Many Yemeni Muslims also come to the Musjid. African Americans from Detroit who want to live in a more Muslim neighborhood have also moved to the area.
- Besides prayers, the center also has weekend talks, classes about Islam, and Arabic language lessons.
- In the 1980s, the Musjid got famous for being the first in America allowed to broadcast the call to prayer using speakers. Today, the Musjid is in a big building covering 48,000 square feet. It also has an Islamic school and a medical center.
