The city of Lahore is home to many historical monuments dating back to the Mughal area when it was the capital of the empire. Known as the ‘Mother of all Musjids’, Musjid Mariyam Zamani is the oldest example of Mughal-era architecture still standing. Also known as Begum Shahi Musjid, it was commissioned in the early 1600’s by Mughal Emperor Jahangir in honour of his mother, Mariyam Zamani – the 3rd wife of Emperor Akbar.

It terms of architecture, the building style is a blend of Mughal and Lodi designs. Embellished with intricate frescoes (the Mughal’s signature adornment) and calligraphy across its walls, the musjid served as an inspiration for the later Wazir Khan and Badshahi Musjids.

In recent years, the building has fallen into disrepair which has inadvertently added to its antique appearance.
