DARUL ULOOM DEOBAND
-
Named after the city of its origin, the north Indian town of Deoband, the madrasa was founded in 1867 by Moulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi and Moulana Qasim Nanautvi.
-
The objective of its establishment was to preserve Muslim identity and heritage in the face of British imperialism, which had replaced the rule of the Mughals.
- What began modestly in 1866 at the old Chattah Musjid under a spreading pomegranate tree with one pupil and one teacher grew over time into a large, professional institution teaching Islam as well as law, logic and philosophy.
-
Soon after its inception many sister madrasas emerged. As the concept gained favour with others in the rest of the subcontinent, a network was formed which grew into one of the most prominent modern reform movements in the region.
