A site for a Musjid in the prominent business district of Durban was purchased by two wealthy traders in 1881. The Musjid constructed was initially a mere 6m x 4m but developed thereafter into the largest Musjid in the Southern Hemisphere.

It served the Muslim community residing in the Durban area as its main Jumuah Musjid for many years and became one of the dominant buildings in Durban’s skyline.
