Herat Citadel
Herat Citadel
- The Citadel of Herat, also known as the Citadel of Alexander or Qala Iktyaruddin, sits at the heart of Herat in Afghanistan. It’s an ancient site, dating back to 330 BC, when Alexander the Great and his army reached Afghanistan after the Battle of Gaugamela. Over 2,000 years, it has been used as a headquarters by various empires and has been destroyed and rebuilt many times.
- Over the years, due to wars and neglect, the citadel started falling apart. But recently, several international organizations decided to rebuild it completely. Inside the citadel, there’s the National Museum of Herat. The Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture takes care of the entire area.
- The museum inside the citadel holds about 1,100 items from the Herat region. Many of these artifacts have been put on display for visitors to see.
