KASBAH OF THE UDAYAS
HERITAGE SITE | KASBAH OF THE UDAYAS, MOROCCO
-
The highlight of the city of Rabat is indeed the Kasbah of the Udayas Fort which was built in the 12th century by the Berber ruler Yaqūb al Mansūr. It is built on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic ocean and the estuary that divides the towns of Rabat and Salé. The fort is a magnificent structure which illustrated its power through its mighty walls to all that passed by the river mouth.

The outer walls however belie its serene, quaint interior. It is a city within a city. The white-and-blue hued walls, the ornate doorways and charming cobblestone road and the pretty flowers that decorate the alleys all add a tranquil, traditional atmosphere to the suburb that has been continuously inhabited for the better part of the last millennium.

It is home to approximately 2,000 of Rabat’s citizens and has its own mosque, fountain, hammam and even a communal bread oven.
