HERITAGE SITE | LYABI-KHAUZ COMPLEX

• The complex forms the center of the famed, majestical, 3000 year-old, ancient oasis city of Bukhara.
• The name Lyabi-Khauz literally means “Edge of a pond” and was one of 80 reservoirs created within the city of Bukhara in the 16th century. Fed by the Zarafshan River, these ponds were indispensable for the inhabitants of the desert city where water was scarce and not easily attainable.
• The square, surrounded by the Kukeldash, Khanaka and Nadir Divan Begi Madrasahs, became a popular spot for locals in medieval times, to shop, attend festivals or just to escape the summer heat.
• Today the picturesque feature in the center of the Old City, surrounded by 15th century mulberry trees, is a national heritage site and is still a popular spot amongst locals and tourists.
