HERITAGE SITE | SHAH JAHAN MUSJID
- The Shah Jahan Musjid, also known as the Jamia Musjid of Thatta, is a 17th century building that serves as the central Musjid for the city of Thatta, in the Pakistani province of Sindh. It was built during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who bestowed it to the city as a token of gratitude. He had taken refuge with the people of Thatta after he had rebelled against his father and fled from Delhi. When he ascended the throne many years later, he didn’t forget the hospitality of the people of Thatta and ordered the construction of the Shah Jahan Musjid as a token of gratitude.
- Built between 1644 and 1647CE, the Musjid is a mixture of Timurid, Mughal and Persian architectural styles and is noted for its geometric brickwork. The tile work is considered to be the most elaborate display of tile work in South Asia.
- The Musjid has 93 domes in total which makes it unique in Pakistan and which few other Musjids in the world can match. The acoustics due to these domes are truly amazing and allow the sound of prayers to be heard clearly all around the Musjid.
