  • An exquisite display of creativity, the Shalimar Bagh garden in Lahore, known as the ‘Paris of the East’, was commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1641 and took 18 months to complete. Also named Shahla Bagh, which is said to mean “sweetheart with dark grey eyes and a tinge of red” in Persian, is a fitting description of the beauty and splendor of the garden.

  • The garden was built not only as an imperial refuge, but also to host the Emperors guests.

  • The Shalimar Gardens covers about 32 hectares (32 000m2) and is arranged in three terraces of walled gardens descending from the south to the north.  It also boasts the the most elaborate waterworks of all Mughal gardens, containing 410 fountains which collect in large marble pools known as haūz. The garden allows visitors to connect with nature and gives them a taste of ‘heaven in earth’.
