Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
-
The Musjid is renowned as one of the most magnificent and luxurious modern Musjids globally.
-
This architectural marvel was a gift from Qaboos bin Said bin Said, the Sultan of Oman, who funded the project himself. The aim was to create one of the most beautiful Musjids in the world, rather than the largest. While the largest Musjid is currently in Dubai, U.A.E., the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat, Oman, ranks as the second largest. An international competition determined the design of the Musjid, which the Sultan wanted to embody both Omani and Islamic architectural traditions. Construction spanned from 1994 to 2000, and the Musjid was officially inaugurated on May 4, 2001, marking the 30th anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Said’s reign.
-
The Musjid was constructed using 300,000 tons of Indian sandstone.

At the time of its completion, the central chandelier was the largest in the world. Additionally, thirty-four smaller chandeliers of the same design adorn various parts of the Musjid.
-
Upon its opening, the prayer hall featured the world’s largest single-piece carpet, meticulously hand-woven in Iran by 600 women over four years, containing 1.7 billion knots.
