THE BIRTHPLACE OF MARYAM AS
Within the Muslim quarter of the Old City near the Lion’s Gate is the Church of St. Anne. The spot upon which the Church is built is believed to be place where Maryam AS was born. It is believed that her parents Imran and Hannah had their home on this spot.
In 1192, the Crusaders built a church on the spot which was converted to a madrasah by Salah al-Din after the conquest of the city named Madrasa al-Salahiyyah. This is commemorated in an inscription above the entrance to the church. In the 19th century the compound was given to the French Order of the White Fathers who converted it to a church once again.
