TAYSEER, MAURITANIA
HERITAGE SITE | TAYSEER, MAURITANIA
- Tayseer is one of the few remaining Islamic schools (mahdharahs) that are still continuing the millennium-old Mauritanian system of teaching and learning. It has been running continuously for the last 200 years.
- The entire system of learning is based on memorisation. Students memorise a few lines daily which is recited to the teacher. It is a long, tedious process, but the books memorised are normally remembered for life.
- With only rudimentary amenities available, life in the village is very simple. Food and accommodation are of the most basic nature. With minimal distractions, the pure, desert life aids the student in his memorisation.
- The village sheikh (leader) is the 80 year old, Sheikh Hasan Al Khadim and has been teaching here for most of his life.
-
Nabbagiyah – This is another well-known Islamic school (mahdharah) and is presided over by the 90 year old Sheikh Ba Abdullah.
