AL-TEKIYEH AL-SULEIMANIYEH MOSQUE
How to get here:
The Musjid is located next to the National Museum which makes it convenient to visit both sites together. They are situated just off the Shoukri Al Qouwatly main road which runs to the city center.
- This musjid has been described as the finest example of Ottoman architecture in Damascus. Designed by the prominent Ottoman architect Sinan under Sultan Suleiman I, construction of the complex began in 1554 and was completed five years later. It is indeed far more modest in scale than Sinan’s projects in Istanbul and elsewhere, the Musjid is nonetheless an impressive example of his work.
- The complex was intended to service the annual Haj pilgrimage, the management of which was an important responsibility for the governor of the region.
