This Musjid is another outstanding monument of ancient architecture. This Musjid was built by Timur (Tamerlane) upon making Samarqand his capital. Bibi Khanum was the eldest wife of Timur and aided him in the administration of empire.
-
At the time of construction in the early 15th century, it was one of the largest Musjids in the world. It is believed that it was built in the throes of victory following Timur’s conquest of India.

The sheer size of the construction was unheard of during those times and the Musjid became quite a spectacle. The structural engineering might not have been of the highest standard as part of the building began crumbling after a few years. It has however managed to stand and with the help of large-scale repairs many years later, the monstrous beauty still stands today.
