Central Mesquita
- The city of Barcelona has a significant historical link with Islam. Between the years 718 to 801CE it was part of greater al-Andalus and was known as برشلونة (Barshilūna or Barshaluna). Some Muslims remained in the city after the fall of Al-Andalus.
- In recent years, efforts have being made to reclaim the history of marginalised groups. The Barcelona History Museum today highlights the history of Muslims in this region of Spain.
- Despite a sizeable Muslim population in Barcelona today, there are few large Musjids in the city, with most of the prayer facilities being found in basements.
- The Centre Cultural Islàmic Català is one of the largest in the city and was built in recent years by private donors.
