GRAVE OF MU’ATH BIN JABAL RA
- Mu’ath bin Jabal RA was amongst those distinguished youth who accepted Islam early on in Medina and was one of the seventy-two person delegation that pledged allegiance to the Messenger ﷺ at Aqabah.
- He had accepted Islam at the age of 18 and after the Prophet ﷺ made hijrah, Mu’ath RA studied the Quran and the laws of Islam under him until he became one of the most well-versed of all the Companions in matters of faith.
- Due to his deep knowledge, the Prophet ﷺ appointed him as governor of Yemen and bidding farewell to him remarked, “Oh Mu’ath, I love you…”. It was one fo the rare occaisiosn when the Prophet ﷺ openly expressed his love for a Companion.
- Later on during Umar’s RA caliphate, Mua’th RA was sent to Syria to advise and teach. When Abu Ubaydah RA, who was the governor of Syria, passed away, Umar RA assigned Mua’th RA to take his place as governor. Within a few months of his appointment, Mua’th RA fell ill. It is said that when he understood that he was dying, he turned to face Mecca and said, “Welcome death, you are long-awaited and beloved.”
- He too had passed away due to the plague and a Musjid with a mausoleum attached to it was erected near the one of Abu Ubaydah RA.
