THE DESERT CASTLES
- Scattered throughout North Eastern Jordan, the six Desert Castles were built by the Umayyads over 1200 years ago and served a range of purposes. They were inns for traders to stop at for a rest, they were country estates for wealthy friends of the caliph, they were agricultural or military bases.
- These castles are some of the best examples of early Islamic art and architecture which include outstanding figurative frescoes and reliefs.
- Most of the castles have a similar structure and layout with living quarters, a bathhouse, a courtyard, agricultural enclosure, storehouse and Musjid with all castles located near a wadi or some source of water.
