The site lies adjacent to the northern wall of the citadel where a tiny musjid has been created to accommodate the tomb.

  • Abu al-Darda RA was a wealthy merchant from Medina who accepted Islam after the Battle of Badr. After accepting Islam, he gave up trade and pursued a life of learning and worshipping.
He left Medina during the leadership of Umar RA and settled in Damascus with the sole intention of propagating and teaching Islam.
  • After the Muslim conquest of Syria, he was appointed as the governor of Damascus by the Caliph Uthman RA.
  • While some researchers believe that he passed away in Damascus, it is more commonly believed that he passed away in Alexandria (Egypt) in the year 652. If that is the case, then the tomb here is a mere cenotaph.
