MUSJID AN NABAWI, MADINAH
- Madinah is the city to which Muhammad ﷺ migrated after fleeing from Makkah. It was also the first seat of the Caliphate after he passed away. Madinah is located north of Mecca in the western desert of the Arabian Peninsula and is the second holiest city in Islam. It is home to Musjid An Nabawi, the third Musjid built in the history of Islam and the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .
- The site was originally adjacent to Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ house where he had settled after his migration from Makkah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ laid the foundation of the Musjid himself and once completed, it served not only as a Musjid, but as a community center, a court, and a religious school as well.
- It was expanded atleast ten times in its history by different Islamic rulers. Umar RA, Uthman RA and thereafter Walid Bin Abdul Malik all extended the Musjid walls to accommodate the growing Muslim community.
- In 1909, it became the first place in the Arabian Peninsula to be provided with electricity.
- With the most recent renovations over the last few years, the Musjid now has the capacity to accommodate up to a million worshippers!
